25 years in the making………
While going through some old photos I found a picture from 1997. A bit faded from time, it was taken at one of my first big shows at the National Ploughing Championships when it was held in Rath/Five Alley, Birr, Co Offlay. Now I knew I had been using resin a long time but definitely not 25 years.
It got me thinking about how much resin work or resin art as it is known now has changed over that time. I was one of the first people in Ireland to cover wood with resin to bring up the colours of the wood grain. In the beginning it was mainly clocks and tables I made and many of the tables had pebbles, shells, coins incorporated in them. Of course these are now known as river tables and are still popular today. The resin itself was pretty stinky, nasty stuff and you always knew when i was pouring it. Nowadays the resin I use is non toxic and odourless and is much nicer to use. You also couldn’t get any colours that would successfully mix with the resin as it would split. Now we can get every colour under the sun and from these you can really do everything. you want from wall art to jewellery along with the new eco resins such as Jesmonite.
Looking back it really has been an evolving journey but then “Rome was’nt built in a day”
