March 2022
Spring is on its way with cold crisp weather…. Finally this month I excited to share a new collection…. Surfite jewellery, my style. But first what is surfite? Surfite is the left over resin from making and repairing surf boards. Another form of epoxy resin, this is dyed lots of colours and like when I’m pouring resin on my boards, trays or art work no matter how careful you are to mix just enough, you always end up with a bit too much.. Now once resin is mixed and cured it’s hard and you can’t pour it again..
So I always pour the left over into a container and over time, like the surf board dudes, I have a nice colourful block of solid resin. This can be hand carved into pieces of jewellery such as pendants and earrings. Unlike sanding wood, when sanding resin you need to keep the resin wet or it heats up and you have to sand for a lot lot longer. With Cheese boards I go to 500 sandpaper grit, with jewellery I go to 10,000 and has to be done by hand.
Generally I used to only make jewellery to commision or for certain Craft Fairs as it tended to go quickly and I never had enough to make onto the website but this month there will be a small selection, just in time for Mother’s Day being listed hopefully around the 12th March.. All my fittings will be of either Sterling Silver or Surgical steel so there should’nt be any allergies problems.
